Vitrectomy Surgery
1. What is recovery like after vitrectomy?
Recovery is typically brief. Most patients resume daily activities in 2–3 days. Full visual clarity usually recovers in 1-2 weeks.
2. Will I have to lie face-down after surgery?
No. Face-down positioning is not required for floater-only vitrectomy. It’s used after retinal detachment surgery with gas bubble placement.
3. Will my vision improve after surgery?
Your vision will be clearer, with the obstructing floaters gone.
4. Will I need to take eye drops?
Yes, you’ll use antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops for a week after surgery to reduce infection and reduce inflammation.
5. Will I need another surgery later on?
If you have floater surgery before you have cataract surgery, you will develop a cataract that will need surgery to treat.
6. What are the side effects of vitrectomy?
Possible side effects include:
Mild eye redness
Temporary blurring
Dryness or irritation
Light sensitivity
7. Does vitrectomy cause cataracts?
Yes. Floater Surgeons recommend that cataracts be treated ahead of vitrectomy.
8. Do I need a referral to have this surgery?
You can schedule a direct consultation with our surgeons, who will assess your candidacy and answer all your questions.
9. What kind of anesthesia is used?
We use monitored sedation (“twilight anesthesia”) and local numbing of the eye. You’ll be relaxed, pain-free, and awake but comfortable.
10. How long does surgery take?
The procedure takes about 30–45 minutes. You’ll be in the surgery center for 2–3 hours total including prep and recovery.
11. What are the restrictions after surgery?
Avoid swimming, eye rubbing, and heavy lifting for one week. Most people return to normal non-strenuous activities within days.
12. How do I know if I’m a candidate for surgery?
